With a lifelong respect for
the environment and love of craft, Mr. Ewing demonstrates a strong commitment to
sustainable design practices in all of his projects. With his exceptional design ability, Ewing artfully transmits the feeling of place and history in his
buildings by using sustainable, indigenous and reclaimed materials,
xeriscaping, minimal grading, tree preservation, maximum natural light, and new
energy technologies.
The 1988 Yellowstone fires
provided an opportunity to demonstrate his design convictions and talent. He reused fire-killed logs for the design of
the 60,000 SF Sleeping Indian Ranch Lodge and established new detail
technologies for recreation retreats in the western mountain states. These rustic timber buildings recall the traditional Adirondack Great
Camps. The Lodge is a true heavy timber log structure with no steel reinforcing
members, a result of his structural innovations. Ewing was the first to acquire
and harvest the fire-killed trees and the first to use them in new
construction. The Sleeping Indian Lodge incorporates indigenous stone from the
site, reclaimed woods, reclaimed slate roofing and fire-killed logs, a truly
sustainable structure that has been recognized with an AIA Honor Award.
