Painting on brushed aluminum rather than canvas, Kessler is able to use wire brushes to abrade into the surface of the aluminum, creating refracted light that is not static. The paint is airbrushed on in transparent layers allowing the burnished areas of aluminum to act as highlights and merge seamlessly with paint to create dazzling images. This technique enhances the illusion of depth and space in the work, as the brushed aluminum highlights appear to move when the light changes.
Educated at the San Francisco Art Institute, Kessler has been showing professionally for over 35 years. His paintings have been shown internationally and are included in over 30 museums and public collections, including the Brooklyn Museum, Minnesota Museum of Art, Phoenix Art Museum, Santa Barbara Museum, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Tucson Museum of Art. He is also represented in the corporate collections of AT&T, Bank of America, Citicorp, IBM, McDonald’s, and Prudential Life Insurance.
