Sergio Bustamante

Sergio Bustamante is constantly challenging himself creating works that have made him internationally known and respected.  His works are variations on themes that have driven Bustamante’s career; the suns, moons, mermaids and ethereal beings the he sculpts.

Explaining the inspiration for the new works Sr. Bustamante, explained, “My maternal grandfather, an extraordinary human being, a tireless worker, was born in China and immigrated to Mexico in 1918.  When I was a child he would often buy toys for me and hide them, so I could seek them out in secret places in the house, which was an old monastery.  In that large house, a ghost used to dwell in a big mango tree on the patio and would always come forth at night.  My grandfather considered this ghost as part of the family.  We were very lucky to have him, as each house in the neighborhood had its own ghost, and this was a good one and we all lived in peace.  I found the ghosts again in Puerto Vallarta that came forth as sketches within shuddering illegible lines on sheets of stained, roughed paper laid out on a table.  Bit by bit and in due time, these ghosts became alive and developed character and personality.  I have never been frightened by them, on the contrary, these characters are loaded with goodwill and good humor.  They can fly, laugh or climb stairs.  Three of them live at the pier in Puerto Vallarta.  My job has been to coexist, play and dream with them and with other magical and wonderful beings such as draped figures, moons, cats, turtles, fish masks and fish children.  Now and then, I ask myself if they dream about me as well.”
