Saige LaFountain

Artist’s Statement

“My love of stone sculpture provides identity to the creative drive within my spirit.  Seldom does a day pass that I do not think of carving stone.  My relation with stone has evolved over the course of my life.  I was raised in an environment that nurtured my creative spirit. I was born into a family of talented, skillful artist, so I learned from a young age to appreciate and develop my creative skills. I spent countless hours in my father Presley La Fountain’s sculpture studio. I watched and observed, curiously in awe of my father’s talent and pursuit of creation. Within this creation, I found an outlet to voice my spirit.  I put so much of myself in every sculpture.  Pushing, striving, chiseling away to do the absolute best that I am capable of. My focus with sculpture entitles respect and nurturing of the very art form that gives me life.”

Biography Saige was born in Boulder, Colorado on June 2, 1981. He is a sculptor whose passions in life are shared through stone and bronze. He works with stone from the quarries of the Americas to the marble mountains of Europe.

Constantly pushing his limits, his work is created using contemporary and traditional techniques. His ideas of flowing figures, rich with culture, are expressed and even exaggerated at times. He loves to carve all of what this medium has to offer. A multitude of innovative sculptures invite viewers to enjoy every angle of his work.

Raised in among artists, Saige carved his first sculpture at the age of eleven for a school project. He was exposed to this art form from the day he was born. His father, being and accomplished stone carver, influenced Saige’s interest even further. Saige spent countless hours observing, learning, and enjoying his father’s talent in the studio. He went on to earn several apprenticeships from accomplished artists, including his uncle, who is also a stone sculptor.

Saige yearns to refine and develop new endeavors. He is always fascinated with the freedom and hidden potentials in every stone. He is driven to establish himself with a voice through stone, and to give back what he can, by sharing his culture, his talent, and his life. He strives to leave a legacy of work behind to inspire future generations.

The stone always captures Saige’s experiences. “My art form is a relationship that always reciprocates effortlessly beyond my expectations. When I was young, I was shown the tools I needed to express myself. Today I embrace this dance that I share with my work. Forever curious to where it will take me.”

Saige is member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa in North Dakota and Dine (Navajo) in New Mexico. He has participated in juried shows, has won several awards, and his sculptures are in private collections throughout the United States.
